Acupuncture and IVF go hand in hand

Acupuncture, herbal therapy, and lifestyle care to prepare your body for assisted reproductive technologies (ART)

Your partner in IVF—before, during, and after—so you can feel like a whole person on the path to parenthood

Acupuncture has enhanced fertility for thousands of years, and in 2002 it entered the mainstream in this country when a pivotal study showed that acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer significantly improved IVF pregnancy rates. More recent studies show that when acupuncture is given consistently—about 10 or more treatments over several weeks or months—the benefits are even more significant. These improvements hold true for fresh and frozen transfers and for donor-egg cycles as well.

At Arrive, our focus is on preparing your body well before retrieval or transfer instead of relying on a single treatment on the day of embryo transfer. Acupuncture and herbal support are at the heart of our work together, and when time allows, we fold in other integrative tools—liver detoxification, comprehensive lab testing, and advanced evaluation of sperm health—to help optimize every stage of your IVF or IUI cycle.

Egg quality: creating healthy eggs takes time

Egg quality is one of the most important predictors of IVF success—especially for women over 35 or for those with diminished ovarian reserve or premature ovarian insufficiency. Whereas western fertility treatments increase the quantity of eggs ovulated in a given cycle, Chinese medicine focuses on egg quality. Acupuncture and herbs increase blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, support nutrient delivery, and soothe inflammation—all essential for healthy follicle development.

It takes time to impact egg quality, at least three months or more. The environment you create in the months leading up to ovulation—through acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, and lifestyle—can directly influence egg quality, implantation potential and a healthy pregnancy.

Beyond egg quality: implantation, uterine receptivity & sperm health

Egg quality is essential, but it’s not the only factor that determines whether a healthy egg becomes a healthy pregnancy. Sperm health and uterine receptivity are also important for successful fertilization and implantation. In Chinese medicine, we look at the whole body—circulation, digestion, stress, inflammation, and hormonal balance—to support these key factors and create the most welcoming environment possible for conception and a healthy pregnancy.

If you’ve experienced recurrent implantation failure or miscarriage, sometimes it’s helpful to look beyond the basics. Exploring the role of the immune system, the vaginal microbiome, or specialized sperm testing can offer valuable insight.

Freezing your eggs? Preparing matters here, too.

If you’re freezing your eggs for the future, the same principles applied to an IVF cycle can be applied during your cycle too. Supporting egg quality, circulation, and overall health in the weeks or months leading up to your retrieval can help optimize the eggs you choose to preserve.

Beyond IVF success: feeling like yourself again

Acupuncture doesn’t just support IVF success—it helps you feel like a whole person during what can be an overwhelming journey. Many of our patients say the best part of their cycle is their time with us— easing side effects, navigating the emotional ups and downs, and having a safe space to simply exhale. Some even share that they wouldn’t have the stamina or focus to get through IVF without this kind of support.

Acupuncture and integrative medicine for ART

If you’re preparing for an IUI or IVF cycle, or freezing your eggs, starting three months ahead is ideal—egg quality, uterine receptivity, and hormonal balance take time. But even if your cycle is already underway, there’s still so much we can do. We can focus on detoxification and prepare for next steps while helping you feel like a whole person again.

"Anne saw me through a couple rounds of IVF, two miscarriages, and the birth of a perfect, beautiful healthy baby boy. I truly believe that acupuncture and the treatment that Anne offered had a lot to do with that pregnancy. I was 43 when I delivered our son. Anne is a wonderful listener, very knowledgeable, thoughtful, sensitive, thorough and very kind. She never appears rushed and I always completely relax when I walk into her practice." -M.H.
